This week’s 100WCGU prompt is:

…the flip side…

This time we don’t have to include those exact words so long as the piece includes flipping of some sort.

Caly opened the curtains to a glorious sunny day, a welcome reprieve from the usual grey. “Let’s go out for breakfast!”

“No, I don’t feel like it. Let’s stay here. I’ll make pancakes,” Harold replied.

She sighed. “I’ll make them.”

“You don’t think I can?” He seemed offended.

“Well—”

“Just let me try.”

“Fine.”
-
Harold presented Caly with a pile of golden pancakes, soaked in buttery syrup.

“Wow!” she said, ready for a taste of heaven. Instead, they tasted like ash.

Caly flipped them over, darker than burnt wood.

Harold reddened. “Guess we’ll be eating out after all.”

Disclaimer: This is not about Jeff. For the record Jeff is the pancake king and if anyone would burn pancakes, it would be me. When I write about couples, there are some who wonder if I’m writing about us. I just wanted to clarify that I’m not.

My mother was born in the year of the dog, in the Land of the Morning Calm. But in spirit, she was always a wolf racing through the Land of the Midnight Sun.

That’s the form her spirit took when it headed north to The Last Frontier.

I imagine her paw prints through Alaska. While her sisters howl at the moon, she’s singing off key, moon-walking her way there.

A whisper no one else hears. A shadow nobody else sees. A dream so real that I forget which is which until it fades to a memory I struggle to remember.

Lesson 4 covered contour line drawing. We were asked to complete several timed assignments.

1) Five Blind Contour Hand Drawings in 20 minutes

We were supposed to draw the contour lines of our hand in various poses without looking at the paper. If you’re doing it right, these are supposed to look funny (so I must be on the right track).

2) Two 50% Blind Contour Hand Drawings in 30 minutes

In these drawings we were allowed to look at our paper 50% of the time. We were supposed to slow down and spend at least 10 minutes on each hand which I was unable to do, so I ended up drawing three instead of two. I tried really hard, but I just couldn’t slow down enough so this is something I need to work on.

3) A Finished Contour Drawing of our hand in 20 minutes

We could draw our hand however we wished, keeping in mind what we just learned about contours.

4) One hour to copy a drawing by Alphonse Mucha

Plus the daily invent and observe sketches that I’ve committed to.

Last Friday was more like ill Friday rather than Illustration Friday so I’m combining two weeks into one post.

What is lurking in the shadows?

Prison Overload

Reblogged from Sylver Blaque:

Which country would you say has the highest prison population in the world? China? Russia? Iran? Guess again. It’s the United States. Nearly half of all prisoners in the world are in American jails. That’s over 2 million people. …

The prompt for this week’s 100WCGU over at Julia’s Place is:

“…it wasn’t my fault…”

This time the children and the grown ups are sharing the same prompt so head over to 100wc.net to read the kid’s stories.

They stared at the open cage.

“It wasn’t my fault,” Hugo insisted.

Cordy glared at him.

“Maybe the rat let himself out. He’s smart enough.”

His words hung in the air.  “Everything feels so heavy and slow.”

“You don’t think he managed to slow down the gears?”

“How?”

“His wheel is missing.”

“He’s just a rat.”

“You said he was smart.”

“Why would he slow time?”

“To delay us long enough to chew a hole through the fabric and escape.”

“If he’s put a wedge in the gears, they’re all gonna stop…”

“Quick! To the machine!”

“I. think. it’s…too…la—”

“Of all my daughters, I don’t know why your father married Madeline. They say the apple don’t fall too far from the tree. Well, I don’t know how that rotten apple got way over here, but the rest of us are a bunch of peaches and plums.”

Nonnie peered down at Lucy.

“I’m sorry she’s gonna be your new momma. World’s not fair.”

Lucy looked down.

“If you can be happy with what you’ve got, you’ll be alright. Tell me dear, what do you got?”

Lucy chewed. “A peach from a plum tree.”

“And I’ve got one sweet little granddaughter.”

In Lesson 3, students are asked to complete 3 drawings within a set time in order to establish a baseline.

1) a small object – 20 minutes

2) an interior space – 30 minutes

3) a self portrait – 30 minutes

In my last Painting-Course post I mentioned that I would be doing one observational sketch and one inventive sketch each working day. I did the baseline sketches over three days (one each day) and counted them as observational drawings.

My interpretation of Odin the Wanderer by Georg von Rosen

This week’s 100 Word Challenge for Grown Ups from Julia is Wednesday.

According to the nursery rhyme Monday’s Child, “Wednesday’s child is full of woe.” After reading this song/rhyme, I wondered which day of the week I was born on. Using a day of the week calculator, I discovered I was born on a Wednesday. Then I wanted to know why woe is associated with Wednesday. Via Google I traced it back to the Norse god Odin (or Woden and various other spellings). So I decided to write something about him.

***

“Your thunder won’t help you any more than my seeing eye will help me. In our attempt to circumvent fate, we only sealed it.”

Thor turned to his father, eyes demanding an explanation.

“Millennia from now you’ll have a day named after you and I’ll have one named after me. ‘Wednesday is full of woe,’ they’ll say. Few will remember why, and no one will worship us.”

Odin continued, “We shouldn’t have locked up that wolf. Those chains won’t bind him forever. When he is freed, he’ll want to fight.”

“We have to strike first,” Thor decided. “Kill the wolf.”
